Family Promise, in coordination with Degage Ministries, ICCF, Mel Trotter Ministries, the Salvation Army and the Coalition to End Homelessness, has applied for a Special Land Use from the City of Grand Rapids to use 1450 E Fulton St. (known as the Fulton Manor) as an Emergency Shelter and Social Service Facility space for families experiencing homelessness.

Each night in Kent County 100-125 families are estimated to be homeless and living on the streets in unsafe conditions. Shelters, where families can stay together, are limited in our community despite the growing need. The proposed uses at 1450 E Fulton St would support up to 116 families, specifically those with children, who are experiencing homelessness. By establishing a social service office space onsite and 24-hour security alongside the emergency shelter, families will have access to safety, resources, and services needed to transition to stable housing. The organizations involved only plan on using 1450 E Fulton as an Emergency shelter until Holland Home is able to finalize their plans to reuse the site for senior housing.

The community organizations involved recognize that this is a temporarily solution for a crisis situation. Long-term planning for family homelessness prevention and solutions is underway, coordinated through the Coalition to End Homelessness and other community organizations.
